Bromo and Ijen trekking

Volcanoes
Java
Beyond Bali

Take a trip to the most impressive places on Earth, to the heaven and hell of our planet - the active volcanoes Ijen and Bromo on the island of Java!

It is here, on the Ijen volcano, that you will see incredible Martian landscapes, a turquoise sulfur lake shrouded in clouds of sulfur vapors, and blue lights glowing in the night. You will also meet locals who extract sulfur with hard work exactly the same as 1000 years ago, lifting heavy baskets with stones from the crater of the volcano itself.

You will go on a real Jeep Safari through the sandy desert with a view of the majestic Bromo volcano, and also meet the breathtaking sunrise on its top. Bromo is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. You will feel the lava bubbling and boiling under your feet, rising from the very center of the Earth.

In a 3-day tour, you will find a balance of vivid impressions and a comfortable stay. After a busy morning trekking and a long road, you will be able to relax and unwind in cozy hotels and homesteads.

Don't miss the opportunity to embark on the most unusual journey of your life!

Journey from Bali to Bromo and Ijen Volcanoes

Day 1. Transfer from Bali to Mount Bromo

08:00–12:00 — At the scheduled time, a driver from the service provider company will arrive at your hotel or villa. Please wait at the reception or near the entrance.
You will travel in a comfortable car through the western part of the island to the Gilimanuk ferry terminal. The road passes through Bali’s most scenic landscapes — beaches, rice fields, and the western national park.

12:00–13:00 — ferry crossing to the port of Banyuwangi in East Java. In Ketapang, there will be a lunch stop at a local restaurant before continuing the trip to the volcano Bromo area.

18:00 — you’ll arrive at village, check into the hotel, and rest after a long day.

Day 2. Sunrise at Bromo and Madakaripura Waterfall

03:00 — departure from the hotel by 4WD jeep to witness the sunrise at the foot of Mount Bromo.

04:00 — arrival at the Pananjakan viewpoint, where you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the Tengger caldera and volcano Bromo. Here you’ll watch the sunrise and capture unforgettable photos.

06:00 — drive across the "Sea of Sand", a vast volcanic plain offering incredible views of the valley. Then begin the trek to Bromo’s crater. After 240 steps, you’ll reach the edge of the active volcano and admire its crater and the Martian landscape surrounding it. After the walk, return to the hotel for breakfast and packing.

10:00 — departure to Madakaripura Waterfall. You’ll spend about two hours exploring the canyon and enjoying the cool mist and natural beauty of the area.

After visiting the waterfall, you will head to the hotel located at the foot of Mount Ijen. On the way, there will be a short stop for a medical check-up and to obtain a trekking permit for Mount Ijen. Then you’ll enjoy lunch at a cozy local café serving traditional Javanese cuisine.

18:00 — arrival at the hotel, check-in, and rest until midnight.

Day 3. Hike to Mount Ijen and return to Bali

00:30 — departure from the hotel to the foot of the active Mount Ijen. Before the hike begins, you will be provided with all the necessary equipment — headlamps and respirator masks to ensure a comfortable and safe ascent.

02:00 — start of the trek. The ascent will take about 1.5-2 hours, depending on your physical fitness. At the crater, you’ll witness the famous “blue flames” — a rare natural phenomenon caused by burning sulfur gases. The crater also contains one of the largest sulfur deposits on Java.

At sunrise, you’ll reach an altitude of 2,386 meters above sea level, where you can enjoy the incredible view of the turquoise acid lake and mountain silhouettes in the morning mist.

06:00 — start descending from the volcano. The descent will take about 2 hours. After returning to the hotel, breakfast will be served and you’ll have time to pack.

10:30 — check-out from the hotel and departure to Bali.

17:00 — arrival time at your hotel or villa depends on the distance of the area and traffic conditions.

Ijen and Bromo trek with homestay accommodation

Really enjoyed the trip to Ijen, Bromo, and Madakaripura! Many thanks to the guide Feby and driver Sudatra for their work! They diligently created comfort and mood during the trip. Unfortunately, our English was very poor and we couldn't keep up a conversation, but the guide and the driver did everything to make sure we understood the plan of action :) At dawn, we couldn't see Bromo in all its glory due to the fog, but when we descended, Bromo was beautiful. The Madakaripura waterfall and the path to it amazed us! A spectacular sight. The descent to the blue flame of Ijen was very difficult and probably hazardous to health, it's probably the only thing I would exclude from the itinerary because with the crowd of people, there's almost nothing to see. But the sunrise on the volcano and the descent from it along the green paths is an incredible sight! Special thanks to Feby for taking great photos for us, and to the driver Sudatra for returning to the hotel when we forgot our wallet in the car. Wonderful people!

Unforgettable experiences! Tropical waterfalls make you feel like Indiana Jones or Mowgli - you find yourself in the wild and blend with it. And the volcanoes 🌋 - there are no words, it's so awesome. Yes, sometimes you wonder: how am I going to climb there? But the view of the crater more than makes up for all the effort. The descent into the Ijen crater - it's just out of this world!!! These are lifetime impressions! Great organization, everything according to plan, good hotels along the tour, car, and most importantly, the guide - Aziz - is very professional, knows answers to all questions, and has a great sense of humor!

Ijen and Bromo trek with homestay accommodation

Many thanks to mybalitrips for organizing the tour to Java. Over 3 days and 2 nights, we visited the Bromo and Ijen volcanoes and the Madakaripura waterfall. At first, I was upset that it was not possible to replace the waterfall with Tumpak Sewu in the 3-day tour, but in the end, the trip to the waterfall exceeded all expectations. It is a very beautiful, tall, and powerful cascading waterfall. The guide and driver were wonderful 👍 What can be improved: 1) organize the ascent to Ijen at a later time (5-7 a.m.), because in my case, it was not possible to see the blue flames or the sunrise, as it was hidden behind another mountain. As a result, I had to wait an hour until it got light to see the lake in the crater, and luckily, the guide helped pass the time with conversation 👍 2) Provide the option to change the waterfall to Tumpak Sewu in the 3-day tour 3) Offer a tour with visits to major temples like Borobudur and Prambanan

Ijen and Bromo trek with accommodation at "Villa 88" and "Grand Harvest"

This was probably the best thing that happened to us in Bali! Stunning volcanoes! Wonderful guide Febi and driver Kancil. The difficulty of the route is definitely above average. Especially Ijen - it takes quite a long time to go on foot and uphill. But when we reached it, we were happy!❤️ We didn't expect the waterfall to make such an impression on us, as we had been to Angel and seen many waterfalls in general. But this one is very beautiful and worth attention. Overall, we were very tired, there was clearly not enough sleep, the trips between locations were long, but worth it! I recommend the excursion to everyone! Thanks to the team!❤️
